Video: I didn’t use ‘back door’ to win Best African act – Jupitar

Dancehall act, Jupitar has refuted claims that he did not deserve the Best African Act he won at the 15th edition of the annual Urban Music Award (UMAs).

Jupitar beat giants Tiwa Savage, Tekno, Vanessa Mdee, Yemi Slade, Sauti Sol, Cassper Nyovest, WizKid and Mr Eazi with his single ‘Clowns’ to win the award.

After he was declared the winner, many argued that it was impossible for him to beat some of the nominees in that category because not much had been heard from him lately in the music industry.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews’ Doreen Avio, the ‘Enemies’ hit singer believes some Ghanaians circulated rumours suggesting that he won the award through the ‘back door’.

“…I don’t know the organisers and I don’t know anybody at the UMAs but my songs are being played ‘back to back’ because they can relate to the kind of songs that I sing. I know it’s the Ghanaians; instead of them to celebrate, they go around saying weird things…,” he said.

Jupitar, who performed at the Red Bull Clash at South Africa alongside Beenie Man earlier this year, added “…I think I deserve it and more. Here in Ghana, we have funny ways of nominating and rewarding people. One will like to see you in controversies before you trend. I deserve this award as far my music is concerned.”
