Wontumi begs for out-of-court settlement?

• As he reportedly avoids court bailiffs

Kwabena Agyapong

Reports reaching The National Pen indicate that Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Antwi Bosiako, popularly referred to as Chairman Wontumi may be seeking an out-of-court settlement with embattled General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyapong.

Mr. Agyapong has sued Chairman Wontumi in court for defamation following accusationsby Wontumi that Kwabena had collected bribe from the NDC to work against the NPP in the 2016 election.
But reports suggest that Chairman Wontumi has avoided court bailiffs as they seek to serve him with the summons in the case brought against him by Mr. Agyapong.
Wontumi who had reportedly boasted that he was prepared to meet Mr. Agyapong in court appears to be beating a retreat and that has compelled the plaintiff to seek an order for substituted service.
Per a substituted service, the defendant does not necessarily have to be served in person and in this instance the court on Wednesday, Novermber 15, 2017 granted an order that the suit and all processes should be posted on notice board of the High Court and Circuit Court in Kumasi, as well as the Ashanti Regional Headquarters of the NPP in Kumasi.
“Once that is done, it will be deemed that he [Chairman Wontumi] has been served,” a member of Mr. Agyapong’s legal team Osbourne Fredua was quoted by Accra based 3News
Meanwhile sources in the party indicate that notable personalities in the party believed to be acting on behalf of the beleaguered Ashanti Regional Chairman have been in touch with Mr. Agyapong for an out-of-court settlement.
“There are efforts to resolve this matter amicably. This is an internal matter and we have advised all parties to cease fire as we seek a resolution outside the court,” a well-placed party insider is reported to have stated.
But sources close to the General Secretary indicate that this is not a matter that will easily be allowed to go considering nature of those “baseless” allegations that have attacked the credibility of Mr. Agyapong.
Sources in the party indicate that Chairman Wontumi has lost popular support even in the Ashanti Region where he had been expected to have a foot-hold.
“The indications are that he may even lose the Regional Chairmanship position and that is may not come as a surprise. The people are not happy with him,” a party insider in the region told The National Pen.
The NPP recently distanced itself from this libelous statements made by Chairman Wontumi against the NPP General Secretary, and sources say that seems to have worsened matters for the troubled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party.
Deputy General Secretary of the party, Nana Obiri Boahen, recently told Accra based Okay FM that the case was between two adults and cautioned against dragging the party into the matter.
“It is their issue and so I don’t want to go into the matter which concerns two adults in the party, and I don’t think the party also wants to go there; let’s keep it there as it is. The two are adults and not minors who know their lefts from their rights and therefore let’s stay out of it. If you debate the issue, it will be prejudicial,” a report on peacefmonline quoted him as saying.
