New BNI boss needs to do more in fighting crime – Security expert

A security expert has advised the new Director of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) to help fight crime.

Adam Bonna who lauded the appointment of the new BNI boss said he should “ensure proper deployment is done and ensure that his officers are properly directed.”

His comments follow the appointment of Rasheed Seidu Inusah as the new boss of the BNI after William Akwasi Appiah was reassigned to National Security, Thursday.

The reasons for the reassignment of Mr Appiah are unclear, even though some people believed it has something to do with the case of the Deputy General Secretary of opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho.

Sources say the leadership of Mr Akwasi Appiah, who was appointed by the Mahama administration has been questionable.

Adding his voice to the management of the Bureau, the CEO of Security Warehouse Limited noted that the Bureau “seems to be failing Ghanaians in the fight against crime.”

He told Evans Mensah on Joy FM’s Newsnight Thursday that the country’s number one investigations bureau must be proactive in getting information to fight terrorism and its related activities.

Mr Bonna who had lauded the latest shakeup in the Police Service said the nation is enjoying the fruit of the action as the frequency of violent crimes has gone down.

According to him, although there are BNI offices dotted across the country, their efforts are not felt when it comes to fighting crime.

“The last time we heard of the BNI doing something significant under former President Mahama was when they conducted investigations to catch some National Service Directors and officials who were engaged in one malpractice or the other.

“But subsequent to that, there have been these Azorka Boys, Delta Force, Invincible Forces and issues with people who gang up by taking the laws into their own hands,” he said.

Mr Bonna said Ghanaians expect the BNI or National Security to get first-hand information but they have failed at doing that.

He advised the new Director to embark on a good collaborative work with the new police hierarchy in place so together, they will be able to fight crime in the country.
